The College of Wooster volleyball team wrapped up its regular season by splitting a pair of non-conference matches Saturday, as the Scots got swept by Bethany (W. Va.) College, but then delivered their own sweep to Washington & Jefferson College in a tri-match at Washington, Pa.
The Scots (18-11) were competitive against Bethany (27-7) despite their eventual 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 setback. Erica Skillman paced the hitters with nine kills, and Devin Grandi added two aces from the service line. Defensively, Zoe Zwegat came up big with eight total blocks, including four solos, while Kelley Johnson anchored the back row with 17 digs.
In its second match, Wooster posted a decisive 3-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson (10-16) by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-14, thanks in large part to the combination of Paige Parker and Autumn Berry, who totaled 14 kills and 44 assists, respectively. Brittany Nicholson also got in on the action at the setter position, as she quarterbacked the Scots through the later parts of the second set.
Other notable contributors in the win were Melissa Morgan (7 kills), Johnson (23 digs), and Grandi (3 aces).
Wooster is now set to compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, where it holds the No. 5 seed and will play fourth-seeded Denison University (19-9, 5-3 NCAC) in quarterfinal action at tourney host Wittenberg University on Friday ay 4 p.m.
