2011 Capital One Academic All-District Team
Three College of Wooster student-athletes were recognized on the Capital One Academic All-District Team for women's track & field/cross country, as sophomore Erin Plews-Ogan earned first-team honors and juniors Kelsie Herring and Katharina Kroll were voted to the second team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
The three award winners were more than any other school within the five-state district (Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee), with a total of just 20 recognized from the college division (NCAA Div. II and III, and NAIA).
Plews-Ogan, who as a first-team selection is now eligible for Academic All-American® consideration, ran the first leg of Wooster's distance medley relay team at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships (indoor), which came in second-place (12:49.81), and she almost earned another all-NCAC (top-three) honor at the outdoor meet where she finished in fourth-place in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11:22.59). Plews-Ogan, who also competed individually in the 3000 meters, was the Fighting Scots' No. 3 cross country runner during the fall, when she took 24th at the conference meet (24:18.9) and 63rd at NCAA regionals (23:35.4).
While running throughout the academic year, Plews-Ogan maintains a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. The anthropology major is involved in a number of extracurricular activities as well, including Greenhouse, a student environmental organization, and various programs with the Office of Interfaith Campus Ministries. Each week, she helps with an English as a Second Language class at a local church. Plews-Ogan received the Elias Compton Freshman Prize and a Medical Humanitarian Fellowship (through the Lilly Project) to help with HIV/AIDS outreach in South Africa this summer.
Kroll was the NCAC runner-up in the javelin this spring with a throw of 114 feet, 9 inches at the championship meet, marking the second second-place finish of her career in that event. She also scored team points for Wooster via an eighth-place performance in the heptathlon (2,741 points), and competed in the shot put and hammer throws.
Academically, Kroll carries a near-perfect GPA (3.93) and majors in business economics. She was one of four grand prize winners on campus in an entrepreneurship competition in 2009, served as an admissions tour guide, and studied abroad in Germany one semester.
Herring earned the second and third all-NCAC honors of her track career this season, first by being part of the runner-up distance medley relay team indoors and then via a third-place run in the outdoor 800 meters (2:20.28). A specialist in the 800, Herring improved seven spots from her NCAC indoor finish (2:26.23).
A biochemistry and molecular biology major with a near-perfect GPA (3.93), Herring is an officer for the school's branch of Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well as a member of the Tri-Beta & Biology Club and Wooster Volunteer Network.
