Along with helping guide players on The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team this spring, assistant coach Audi Glass will be working to improve his own game as well, as the former collegiate standout was selected by the Ohio Machine, a newly formed expansion team in Major League Lacrosse (MLL), to join its 40-man active preseason roster and compete for a larger role on the team.
The MLL, which is considered the preeminent field lacrosse league in the United States, began play in 2001. Initially a six-team league, the MLL recently added expansion teams in Columbus, Ohio and Charlotte, N.C. that will debut in May.
Glass, who played college lacrosse at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec, and has since played on club teams in Adelaide, Australia and Cleveland, Ohio, was claimed by the Ohio Machine during the MLL's waiver process, which occurs after the supplemental draft and allows teams to fill out their 40-man preseason rosters.
"I'm pretty stoked," said Glass. "Lacrosse has been such a big deal to me for most of my life, so to get this opportunity is amazing. The way I look at it is I've got three months to get into tip-top shape and really give this my all."
Before the regular season starts May 5, the Machine will have to cut down their active roster to 25, meaning Glass will have to impress during upcoming training camps in order to play with the team on game day. However, even if Glass doesn't make the active roster right away, he will likely remain on the practice squad during the regular season, giving him additional opportunities to move up the ranks.
"Between coaching here (Wooster), and playing on a club team in Cleveland, I already eat, sleep, and breathe lacrosse as it is," added Glass. "I'm going to have a lot of fun training for this, and it's really a perfect time, with the new Scot Center and Swigart Strength Center at Wooster."
Glass was born in Canada, but grew up in northeast Ohio where he attended Western Reserve Academy. He then returned to his native country to play collegiately at Bishop's, a member of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association, where he was a three-time CUFLA all-Canada selection (twice as a defender and once as a long-stick midfielder), and the co-winner of the 2008 CUFLA Most Valuable Graduating Player.
