Fresh off an outstanding playing career for the Fighting Scots, John McLain joined the Wooster coaching staff for the 2016 campaign, and is now in his third year on the staff where he works with the hitters and infielders, in addition to serving as the bullpen coach.
A three-year starter at shortstop, McLain steadily improved throughout his career and capped it by earning all-Mideast Region and first-team all-North Coast Athletic Conference recognition. He batted .347 during 2015 with 25 extra-base hits (14 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs) and 46 RBI. Exercising patience at the plate, he drew 35 walks, which along with nine hit by pitches, led to a .477 on-base percentage.
For his career, McLain hit .313 with 34 doubles, 15 homers, and 116 RBI. He was a slick fielder, piling up 400 assists – the third-most in team history – and aggressive on the base paths as well with 34 steals. In addition to his postseason accolades as a senior, he was second-team all-conference as a sophomore.
A local product from Northwestern High School, McLain graduated from the College with a bachelor’s degree in history and is now working in the area.
